History of Prototype:
In 1947, Pullman began standardizing its freight car designs with the PS-1 boxcar. At the time, covered hoppers were a rarity on the rails. Products such as cement, grain and sand were still being transported in boxcars. This changed in the mid-1950s when Pullman standardized a covered hopper design, the PS-2. The first and most widely recognized PS-2 model was a 2,003 cubic foot car that measured about 34 feet in length and featured two bays that straddled the center sill, as well as eight round hatches in the hopper cover. Railroads and private companies now had a purpose-built option for the efficient loading, transport and unloading of a variety of commodities like cement, salt, whole grains and much more. The PS-2 hopper was a staple in American railroading from the mid-1950s well into the 2000s, and we hope our LEGO® replica will find a home on your layout’s rails!
