History of Prototype:

The waffle-side boxcar was introduced in the mid 1970s as a solution to satisfy two competing desires related to a boxcar’s interior. The first is for smooth interior walls, which mitigate the chances of damage to cargo caused by punctures or snags. The second desire is for wall-mounted tie-down rings or similar attachment devices used to secure cargo. The waffle-like pattern on the exterior walls of the boxcar are actually recesses stamped into the interior walls to accommodate these attachment devices, thus achieving a smooth interior wall and the ability to secure cargo almost anywhere inside the boxcar.

The Southern Railway was one of the first to adopt the waffle-side boxcar design, accepting its first delivery from Pullman-Standard in 1974. Many other railroads followed suit, buying boxcars with various waffling patterns from a variety of manufacturers. Though some waffle-side boxcars are still in service today, it is rare to see one, as container cars have taken over many of the loads once carried in these boxcars.
